Why is this study being done?

Women are under-represented in health research. This study evaluates the potential risks and benefits of a playing career dedicated to women’s soccer at the elite level. It addresses 5 areas of health that focus on the whole player: physical, musculoskeletal, female athlete, neurocognitive, and mental.

Who is eligible to participate?

Participants need to be retired or former players who are 70 years of age or younger. For the purpose of this study, we are defining elite level as any of the following:

  • College: Played at least 1 year at a NCAA institution (Divisions 1, 2, and 3)
  • Semi-Professional: Played at least 1 season in the W-League, WPSL, UWS, or equivalent
  • Professional: Played at least 1 season in the WUSA, WPS, NWSL, or top division overseas
  • Senior National Team: Earned at least 1 cap for any country

In addition, participants need to be physically located in the US due to data privacy regulations.

What are the goals of the study?

The goals are to provide a better picture of the health status of elite-level women’s soccer players and to help protect future generations of women’s soccer players. The findings from this initial survey will also inform future studies.

What are the possible risks?

This study involves an anonymous survey and is considered minimal risk. However, there is always the risk of a data breach by someone outside of the research team. We have done everything possible to protect your data. The REDCap platform is secure, HIPAA-compliant, and widely-used for scientific research. All datasets will be password-protected and stored on a secure server. Results will only be reported in aggregate, never individually.

What do I need to do?

Your participation is voluntary. The online survey contains questions that correspond to each of the 5 health areas. We have chosen the shortest possible questionnaires that have been scientifically tested. We estimate that it will take 10-20 minutes to complete the entire survey. We ask that you answer all questions, since missing data can reduce the validity of the study results. However, you may skip questions (unless otherwise noted) or stop at any time.

Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns about the study?

Please contact the study’s principal investigator, Dr. Ellen Casey (caseye@hss.edu). There are officials at our institution who make sure that we follow all federal guidelines for research. You may also contact the Institutional Review Board at Hospital for Special Surgery (212-774-2939).
